The Office of Tourism was established in August of 2010. The program is funded by a 2% transient occupancy tax (bed tax) authorized by legislation passed in 2009 by the Virginia General Assembly. The legislation stipulates that revenue generated by this tax must be spent in support of tourism activities 1% of the revenue gerenated by the transient occupancy tax must be spent for tourism and travel, marketing of tourism or initatives that attract travelers to the locality and generate tourism revenues within the locality.
