Visit Bath County is a 501c6 not-for-profit under contract with Bath County as the official destination marketing organization for Bath County. Visit Bath is funded 2% of the transient occupancy tax (bed tax) authorized by legislation passed in 2009 by the Virginia General Assembly. The legislation stipulates that revenue generated by this tax must be spent in support of tourism activities 1% of the revenue generated by the transient occupancy tax must be spent for tourism and travel, marketing of tourism or initiatives that attract travelers to the locality and generate tourism revenues within the locality.

1% of the revenue generated by the transient occupancy tax shall be spent for the design, operation, construction, improvement, acquisition and debt service for tourism facilities, historic sites, beautification projects, promotion of the arts, regional tourism marketing efforts, capital costs related to travel and transportation including air service, public parks and recreation and information centers that attract travelers to the locality and generate tourism revenues in the locality.

In addition to the 2% dedicated funding for Visit Bath, Bath County adopted a 2% percent occupancy tax in 2004 which goes directly to the General Fund for county operations.

In 2018 the Virginia Legislature passed a 5% historic restoration lodging tax specifically for The Omni Homestead Resort with the funds funneling through the Economic Development Authority for criteria met then back to the Omni for restoration of the historic property. This lodging tax is only collected at The Omni Homestead Resort.

 



The tourism sector employs almost 65% of Bath County's workforce and generates nearly $88 million in visitor spending and is the primary industry for Bath County. The benefit of this visitor spending for Bath County residents is an average household tax savings of over $2,200 a year, the second largest household tax savings for any city/county in Virginia.
